This page is a work in progress.

One of the hardest things about being abroad is the issue of language. Even in English-speaking countries slang and dialect can be challenging and if you’ve not grown up with a language, it can be downright daunting to be suddenly thrust into one. In this page we’ll try to provide links to translators, language-learning resources (focusing on free when possible), and other tips when it comes to language.

There are country and language-specific resources on our country pages.

Foreign Service Institute/Defense Language Institute/and United States Peace Corps

The US Government deported you, so it’s only fair that you should be able to use their resources to learn the language of the country you’re in!  Check out for many resources in lots of languages. I’ve found many of these to be outdated and dry, but in a pinch they’ll get the job done.
